#REDIRECT Robot
An Android is an automaton designed to look like a human.  It is a machine that walks, talks, wears clothes, and otherwise interacts with objects and beings in ways similar to real humans.  It can be sentient or controlled by another entity.

In gynoid related fiction and media, an android is typically a robot which looks as close to a human as possible, with skin, hair, and proper male or female anatomies.  A male can be referred to as an android while a female can to as a gynoid, though the term android is usually understood to apply to all genders.  This differentiates them from robots, which may crudely resemble males or females, but with metal skin or appendages, and an overall mechanical appearance.

Real androids
The Actroid and EveR-1 are widely considered to be among the first real androids produced.  They still lack certain characteristics that fictional androids have, such as autonomous locomotion.

In fiction
There are numerous examples, but there are a few that standout:
*Andrea from Star Trek
*Buffybot from Buffy the Vampire Slayer
*Rommie from Andromeda
*Valerie 23, Mary 25, Teryl, Wendy, and Mona from The Outer Limits
