Exotic Imported Androids of Little Sanctuary : BESM-HCP

by Henry Buffercluck

I came over to Little Sanctuary after the Armistice ended hostilities between the Free American Union and the True American Union a few years back in favor of the TAU focusing its attention on attacks by Europa. I have different tastes from the local folk here, it has to be honestly admitted. So when the Housing Programme asked me if I wanted a Spousal Unit, I agreed, but requested to supply my own unit, who now answers to me as Luna... This article is written based on information provided to Little Sanctuary's reviewing authorities for the initial purpose of approving the import of the BESM-HCP as built by the Eldos Products - TAU Military "Love For Soldiers" Joint Project and declassified info I was able to access.

BESM?

The actual deacronymisation of BESM in the name of this unit remains a TAU classified detail and was never disclosed to me. However, wags in both sides of the war have coined their own, such as

  • "Battle Endoskeleton, Small Model",
  • "Battle Ending Small Maiden",
  • "Bitch with Extremely Suspicious Motives",
  • "Busty Exploding Suicidal Munition",
  • "Bloody Evil Stilleto Machine"
  • "Big Eyes, Small Mouth"

and many other coinages based on characteristics of the unit as well as their personal experiences with the unit either during the War, or during the current Thaw. Personally, I prefer the "Big Eyes, Small Mouth", since it's more peaceful AND describes a peculiar trait of the BESM series of androids - they have extremely large eyes and extremely small mouths. The large eyes allowed for larger multi-mode eyes, and the smaller mouth... well, something had to give to fit those extra large eyeballs.

It has to be borne in mind that this was a exotic unit issued mainly to higher-level commissioned officers as a confidant and gopher, was often deployed as a heavily overboosted weapons system, a psychological torture/manipulation system, or as a form of espionage drone depending on ops requirements. As such, personal experiences with the unit tend to differ depending on which end of the unit you ran into. Free American Union veterans tend to be much less complimentary in their deacronymisations as they often got the short end of the stick when dealing with this android type during the War. True American Unionists tend to be more praiseworthy, with maybe a bit too much writing extolling the virtues of feminity and loyalty paraded by the design.

BESM-HCP

The HCP in "BESM-HCP" stands for "Human Companionship Protocol". This variant of the BESM post-dates the Armistice as signed by both sides of the WAr, and is unusual in that it is issued only to civilians who have provided service resulting in a high-level commendation during the war either as a conscript or a enlisted troop in the TAU.

Many of the systems that characterise the performance of the BESM series are either removed or heavily disabled, or replaced with generics that can be sourced anywhere in the world allowing civilians who own such BESM units to export them anywhere outside of the True American Union. This means a heavy loss of power, speed and processing capability, and BESM-HCPs often exhibit clumsy, seemingly dumb, and often child-like behaviors on occasion as a result. However, this also allows for more flexible programming of behaviors, as well as a complete decoupling from the TAU military systems that the BESM series normally is heavily reliant on for long-term operation.

The general shortness of the unit (1.49m or so depending on modifications by the user), this means the unit is often mistaken as a child especially when exhibiting more child-like behaviours on occasion and/or when wearing clothes intended for younger children that fit its frame. It was in fact a little touch-and-go for me as to whether my unit would be approved, or whether I would have to appeal, or send it back home to the TAU for reassignment. Fortunately nicer minds prevailed. In any case, the unit remains incredibly overbuilt and survivable, and people who have seen my wife at the swimming pool have often remarked on how much she is built stoutly like a very small brick fence. (Yes, BESM-HCPs can swim, and very well - another capability that either couldn't be removed or wasn't deemed worth removing.)

Repairs and Maintenance

Having a non-Arendtcore unit for a Spousal Unit or Child Unit in Little Sanctuary poses additional problems for owners who bring them in. To begin with, Medicalcare may not necessarily be an available option. the local system does support selected non-Arendtcore brands and models, but this is very iffy, and relying on it is not an option. The owner needs to have enough competence to service their android on their own and sufficient access to spares and consumables as required of their unit, or access to a competent authority in maintenance or repairs of their chosen android.

Fortunately, the demilitarization of the BESM-HCP design also means that parts can be sourced from virtually anywhere or even printed at home on a proper mesh printer, subject to the quality you desire in the parts being serviced. I also have some technical chops from working on the Love For Soldiers Project for several years, and this has allowed me to understand how the model is built, and why it stops working or starts acting up whenever it does with just a little examination in most cases. Anyone who opts for an import model of any sort needs to consider if they can learn the skills and spares required to service their android or if they can access such expertise and parts within Little Sanctuary.

Configuration and Programming

The replacement of classified processing chipsets with a Generis KVP530 CPU chipset means the BESM-HCP, though considerably more underpowered than its military counterparts, can be easily reprogrammed through the alteration of open-source code on its supplied microboards. A surprising amount of complexity is possible depending on the technical chops of the person implementing these microboards, and I was fortunately enough to find someone who could implement a relatively robust learning system. My wife basically learns from experience and from the basic act of living, though the system has its limits and running into something particularly out-of-field or esoteric has caused system freezes ever so often. This happens a lot less with normal situations though. She still sucks at cooking, mind.

Survivability and Looks

The BESM-HCP doesn't have any of the scary things that made the BESM series a nightmare to take down during the war, but it IS heavily overbuilt for its size, and it allows the owner to use components that focus less on branding and more on economy, build quality and/or resilience as desired. As a result, Luna does look a little like a brick house when nude or in skimpier clothing, but I still adore her very much as is. Another thing to note is that the Big Eyes Small Mouth facial design is very cute, and psychological manipulation of others using its characteristics has been noted. Go on, ask me how I know.

Sexual Capability

The BESM-HCP makes use of generics as seen in many modern sex toy products to provide a sufficient (at least to me) vaginal experience. The mouth of the unit, while visually small at first glance, has been known to expand a lot to fit some considerably larger things. And she has no gag reflex - I didn't configure or program her to gag from stuff in her throat, really. No backdoor though - that's where the digester waste comes out and I'm not keen to risk contact with whatever's left after the fact.

Getting along in the Community

A BESM-HCP is basically either a very mature but short woman, or one posing as a kid through clothing and behavioral choices. Both modes have been employed by my wife on everyone she meets to various extents. While supposedly less smart, it is still very scary to me how she can go from being a friendly kid to a child or elderly person who seems to need a partner or a listening ear in the parks, to being a sophisticated lady at parties and social interactions with actual adults. At some point, she started to learn how to switch between modes on her own rather than via owner prompting, and I don't even know when it happened. That learning system is scary as heck when you think about it...

Or maybe she still had that capability from when she was still a military model. I have no idea, frankly. It's all voodoo to me at this point - I just know enough to diagnose most issues with her I have.

One issue that Luna DOES have is her Eastern accent. It is a bit thicker than it should be, and sometimes that leads to confusion or misheard things. This is a issue with the vocal synthesizer she uses, and I'm still looking for a better replacement. But that accent IS charming to me, seeing as I grew up around ladies who spoke like that, and I may wind up just living with the issue...
