League of Legends is a 2009 multiplayer battle arena in which players must capture the opponent's base using a character referred to as a "champion". Each champion has unique abilities and play styles, and a champion needs to obtain items and experience points to get strong enough to defeat the opponent's defenses. Whoever destroys the "Nexus", a large structure on the opponent's side, wins.

A typical League match consists of 10 players in a 5v9 PvP battle. While some would claim that a match is a 5v5, 4 of the opponents are actually on your team. Unless you have really good friends, games will devolve into screaming matches as teammates inevitably turn on each other. For this reason, League of Legends is exceptionally popular with Twitch and YouTube, though many of the really salty players have since moved on to other games, as the competitive scene has slowly but surely found their childish behavior unacceptable.

The world of League is called "Runeterra", a land of magic, technology, and magical technology. The basic premise is that Runeterra used to be in constant warfare until the Council forced everyone to stop fighting hugely destructive wars and instead fight in tournament matches to resolve disputes. If two countries have a dispute that cannot be resolved politically, each will choose a champion to represent them in Field of Justice. To make sure that no one party has an advantage, power levels are evenly balanced. This means that a literal mouse with a blowgun can fight on-par with an eldritch force of infinite cosmic destruction and somehow win.

Most of the technology in this setting is called Hextech. Many champions are equipped with Hextech weapons and augmentations, with some even created entirely out of Hextech. There is also the PROJECT storyline, which is non-canon but features a bunch of champions reimagined as cyborgs in a dystopian cyberpunk-esque world.
