Shawn had to be a little careful when he came home with products from his job. Products might be a bit of a stretch on what he actually had. They were work, his work, partially at least. He did a fairly large amount of engineering and a little coding when the need arose. His specialty was design though. When asked what he did his usual response was some sort of cool reply about how the eggheads might get to design the parts, but he got to put it all together. Which was, for the most part, true. 

In reality Shawn was a field test agent for LoveWorks. After the manufacturing and hardware team had made the circuitry and wiring, the coding team had assembled the programming, and the quality assurance team had broken everything, something like a final product started to come together. It wasn't a quick process, not by a long shot, and all of it culminated in a sort of back and forth, give and take. 

The hardware team always wanted more physical space for the actual internal workings of a component. The argument was always that there needed to be airflow for cooling needs, future proofing the hardware to allow for expansions and upgrades, and there was always the assembly aspects. Space meant that their technicians would have an easier time getting any given component into, and then out of, an android. Why would anyone want to do that though? Well upgrade of course! 

On the other hand, the software team was well aware that as time marched forward and technology progressed that hardware got smaller, more efficient, and more greedy for power. Along with that came the demand for good and efficient coding, but there was little that could be done when the goal was to write a program that imitated human behavior. Not just human behavior, but every little facet of humanity. Surely it wasn’t difficult to make an android that looked human, but acting human was a different challenge. 

Big bulky blocks of code were written and those needed storage space and more powerful processors to parse. More temporary swap space to cache executables and the very latest hardware so they could write code that was backwards compatible. More hardware meant more programming which required more hardware. It was a vicious cycle, and eventually someone needed to strike a balance. 

Once that balance had been struck through and the product was made, it was sent to QA for initial testing and troubleshooting. Once a new part or component passed those checks it would be time for Shawn and his team to step in. Clinical tests under a controlled environment were perfectly fine for proving that a part could work, but they would never show off how a part would work. That was where the field test team came in. 

Shawn was the lead in one such field test team, and he was currently opening the door to his house, well, really it was LoveWork’s house, but that was semantics. He lived there with his company owned wife, and his company owned daughters. He was attempting to be quiet because in his hands was a LoveWorks branded box with a new component in it that was set to begin field testing. 

LoveWorks, a company that specialized almost exclusively in high end “companionship” androids, had sent him home with something they hoped would further their little slice of the android marketshare. A new sexual module that would offer numerous benefits, not the least of which was increased efficiency, lowered power consumption through a new type of power regulator, while still offering all the comfort and pleasure of the previous model. Shawn had every intention of installing it in his wife, Miriam, tonight. 

The only catch was that she didn’t know she was an android. Her programming was specifically crafted so that she wouldn’t notice some of the more obvious signs. A box branded with the name of a popular robot manufacturer, on the other hand, might tip her off that something was amiss, and the paperwork for getting an android's memories modified or outright wiped were tedious at best and maddening at worst. 

“Hey dad!” 

Katie’s voice, loud and curious, made Shawn jump. Worse, it made him drop the box he was carrying. He thanked his lucky stars that the branding on it fell face down on the floor, Katie wouldn’t be able to see it right away. He also wasn’t sure if she was aware of what LoveWorks was, or what they did. Best not to risk it though. Still for now he was safe. 

“What’s this? Something for Mom?” She asked with a salacious tone in her voice and bent forward to pick it up. 

“No!” Shawn’s knee jerk reactions weren’t exactly those of a smooth operator to say the least. What they were, however, were rooted in the technology in front of him. “Katie- admin override!” 

Shawn had blurted her override without really thinking it through. His daughter had already acknowledged that she knew who he was and combined with the mere sound of his voice pattern, there would be more than enough biometric data to authenticate him as someone with the authority to command her around, if he wanted. So speaking a simple command like that was more than enough for her operating system to suspend the complicated array of software and technology that made her act human. The trouble was that now he had a choice to make. 

He could submit the paperwork to wipe her memories, or at very least have them modified so that she would have no idea this particular encounter had happened. How far back would he need to trim it though? That was something the technical team would have to work out, but that absolutely hated working on anything that wasn’t hyper specific. 

Option two, he did some form of maintenance on her and let her operating system do the work instead. As soon as he had overridden her a log was created and it would return her to this very spot as soon as there was a hardware change or a software update. Once she returned, all Shawn would have to do was play cool and pretend that the box had something in it that was a secret from Miriam…or something. That was future Shawn’s problem. 

Unfortunately there were no software updates that he could force into her OS. There was, however, the new sexual module in the box. 

Shawn sighed. Katie was as good a test platform as Miriam, better perhaps. Shawn was no fool and knew that his daughter, designed to look nineteen or twenty, was fairly sexually active. He had seen the log files, he knew what she got up to. 

“Override acknowledged. Suspending biological mimicry functions. Suspending memory core, one moment.” 

It would take a second or two for Katie’s robotic mind to dump everything into a saved state, allowing Shawn plenty of time to bend down and scoop up the box. 

“Memory core dump complete. Save state registered.” She murmured and stood up straight, stiffly and distinctly inhuman. 

“Lab. Prepare for vaginal ejection and replacement. Online conditions. Verbose.” Shawn said as he scooped up the box from the floor. Katie, unblinking, marched to the hidden laboratory where she had been a number of times before, but never remembered it. 

Katie’s operating system was pretty good at modifying itself and the data it received to overlook certain things. It was too much data to simply overlook anything overtly robotic about her or her mother and sister, but it was enough to hide the door to Shawn’s in-home lab. By the time he got there and locked the door behind him Katie had already removed her jeans and panties, leaving them in a small pile at the foot of the stainless steel table she currently lay on. As Shawn arrived she was already spreading her legs and her operating system was pulling up the coded instructions on unlocking her vaginal assembly. 

Shawn barely noticed the small whining that the internal ejection system made. He had heard it hundreds of times before and it was just background noise now. By the time he had set down the box, proudly proclaiming the contents as a “LoveWorks Gen 4 HyperSense Pro.” He had to snort at that when he heard the name. It was a marginal performance increase from the previous Gen-4 vaginal modules. HyperSense Pro seemed like a buzz word to say it would work a little faster in some ways. 

Not that it mattered, he wasn’t here to critique naming conventions, he was here to install some hardware. 

Shawn had snapped on a pair of gloves and was holding the new vaginal assembly. Long and slender and encased in a matte blackish grey casing. He knew inside of it was a long faux latex lined canal, perfect for, well for what sexbots were made for. Delicate wiring and circuitry would have studded that and at the end, a rubberized seal that would link into any LoveWorks brand android. There were plenty of other parts to it too, motors and controllers to operate it like a human woman’s vagina would, heaters and lubrication injectors too.

Shawn wriggled his fingers into the space between the lip of synthetic flesh that made up the upper portion of Katie’s ejected module and her body. He would never understand why they didn’t make these modules slide all the way to the end of their rails. He huffed once at that, and worked his fingers into place before gingerly wiggling the old module out of his daughter and setting it on top of the anti-static bag that her new module had been wrapped in. 

Shawn looked down at the new piece, examined it for a moment and realized he had it upside down. Flipping it over allowed him to mount it on the rails and push inward. They had certainly improved the bearings and allowed it to slide in and out easier, that much was for certain. Once it was in far enough, the automated retraction took over. A new whine took over and gently pulled the device into place. 

Soon old flesh met with the new and a whirring vacuum resounded deep inside of Katie’s body. It pulled the two parts of the skin together and sealed it tightly. Shawn spent that time tidying up a bit, closing up the box again as he would soon need it, and of course, taking a deep breath. 

Testing was his favorite part of the process. 

Katie’s legs were spread and she was muting small words about loading drivers and connecting the fluid reservoirs to her newly installed module. All standard things for a robot of her caliber to be espousing. Shawn, meanwhile, was undoing the buckle on his belt and kicking off his shoes. After all, the new module needed input in order to record data, and Shawn had plenty of input. 

Katie might have said she was his daughter, and he would always proclaim her as his daughter, but in reality he knew what she was, and what she was not. She was a robot, more than that she was a specifically designed sexbot. A machine made for one thing. The human-like behavior and little tells that might convince someone that she was a person were just set dressing to what she really was. 

She was so much smaller than Miriam as well. It was a fact that went unnoticed in the normal day to day, but laying here on a slab below him, he could see it much better. He could feel her chest rising and falling as his hand remained locked on her chest while he himself panted for fresh air. Within a matter of seconds though, Katie’s breathing decreased to nothing at all. Her processors already cooling from the sexual stimulus. She was once again looking at nothing at all, unblinking and unphased. She was, again, just a machine now. 

A machine Shawn’s softening dick was still stuck inside. He pulled himself out and awkwardly clambered off of the table.

Shawn nodded, feeling the waves of euphoria wash over his brain. He sucked in one last breath and let it seep out of his nostrils as he snatched up a roll of paper towels and pulled off a few sections to clean himself up. He pulled off another section and dabbed off Katie’s still wet outer lips. Shawn redressed himself and smoothed out some of the wrinkles in his clothes. 

“Alright Katie. Log data from encounter and apply it to daily compression cycle.” Shawn commanded. 

“Confirmed.” Katie replied. 

“Good. Uh, resume human emulation at last known good configuration.” 

“Confirmed. This state requires additional entities. Father and- small box.” She said as her operating system converted the raw data into spoken words. 

“Oh, uh, yeah okay. Uh…” Shawn looked around for a box that would work as a stand in for the one he dropped. One that didn’t have company branding on it. Eventually he found one that would work and stuffed a few handfuls of wiring and tools into it. Future Shawn, now present Shawn, was ready to resume his entry back into the house. 

With the box ready, Shawn was about to get Katie back into place when he felt and then heard the dull vibrations of his phone in his pocket. He looked up at Katie and issued a quick order for her to go into standby. An order she blankly confirmed and then laid down on the table again, though her eyes remained open, vapidly staring at nothing.  Her processors dipping into a low power mode and her motor controls relaxing her into the table. 

“Hello?” Shawn had only barely seen the contact, it was a company number so he felt perfectly fine simply answering it. 

“Hey Shawn, how’s things?” 

Shawn knew that voice, and for a moment it almost stopped his heart. Cool and feminine though perfectly confident. Friendly too, and that was all part of the problem with Anise Moreno. She was so friendly and approachable and also completely in charge of all of LoveWorks. 

As CEO’s go she was unconventional for certain. She would be the first to tell anyone, from a new technician to a multi billion dollar investor, that she liked to get her hands dirty. She had, in many ways literally, built the company with her own hands, and she was not afraid to tell people as much. She wasn’t much for small talk though, or in some cases, manners. As Shawn stumbled for a moment and greeted her, he could hear her chewing on something on the other end of the phone.

“Mmm, sorry.” She said as she swallowed a mouthful of turkey and ham on wheat. “I just saw that we got a ping from the Gen-4 HyperSense Pro. Testing it out I see?” He could hear her winking through the phone somehow. 

“Yeah, uh, just got home and installed it.” Shawn replied. 

“Good. Keep it up, we’re gonna need a lot of data on that one before it goes to market.” 

Another bite. 

“Speaking of which. I don’t know if you saw the email from earlier today.”

Shawn blinked. “..No, I don’t think I did.”

“I didn’t think so.”

“Should I be worried?” Shawn asked, feeling his heart begin to flutter a bit again. 

“No no, not at all. I just know that the operations team likes their paper trails. So, email and let it be. That kind of thing. That’s actually why I was calling you.” She took another bite of whatever she was eating, clearly stuffing it in one side of her mouth and continuing to talk. “It’s about your other daughter, Lucy. I was thinking that I’d like to deploy another unit to your neighbor's house and see if we can introduce the two of them. I’d like to see how two more mature interpersonal units interact with one another, you know, see if they can play off one another and all that jazz.” 

“Oh! Sure, ah, I can pick one up from the office tomorrow and-” 

“Already ahead of you. I had one shipped over to the other house on your cul-de-sac. It looks like it was delivered just before this call, so she just needs to be put together.” 

“She?” Shawn asked. “You didn’t want to deploy one of the male units?” 

“Where’s the fun in that?” Anise chuckled at her joke. She was the only one. “Still, do you mind?”

Shawn appreciated the difference between a CEO ordering him what to do, barging into his field tests and telling him what to do, and what Anise was doing. Despite her authority, and her right to tell him to change things, he knew he had the freedom to tell her ‘no’. He had before and after some reasoning, she agreed. This time there was no real good reason to not go through with the test, particularly because of Lucy’s recent breakthrough. 

She had, through some combination of discovery and programming combinations. She had asked to remain aware of what she was. She knew she was a robot, and likely that she was designed for companionship, and had actively chosen to remain aware of that. It was an incredible breakthrough and one that, apparently, Anise was keen to capitalize on. 

“After dinner, at least.” Shawn replied and Anise chuckled in reply.

“Of course, of course. There’s no huge rush or anything. I know you’ve had a hard time of things, so maybe utilize that indoor spa, sauna, hot tub thing you have there.” 

“It’s just an indoor jacuzzi room.” Shawn said dryly. 

“Right! That. Relax a bit. There’s no need to be so serious all the time, you know.” 

It was good advice, and something Shawn had heard before from multiple different people. He just wasn’t sure he could convince himself to actually do it. The in-home jacuzzi helped though. 

Shawn hung up after a brief sign off and looked back to Katie. Still fully a robot, and unlike her older sister, unaware of what she was. She was still just a machine following commands and code and dutifully executing as her operating system saw fit. Maybe one day she would have her moment of revelation, Shawn would like that, but for today it would have to be a new sex module and nothing else. 

Shawn picked up the box and placed a hand on Katie’s shoulder. The tactile feedback was enough to wake her. She opened her eyes and sat up, scooting off of the table and standing at perfect attention for her father. 


“Alright, let's resume.” Shawn muttered

“Confirmed.” 

Katie marched along and waited for Shawn to signal her that there was no conflict with other housemates. Really, Shawn was just peeking out of his office and making sure that Miriam and Lucy weren’t around. With the coast looking to be clear they walked back to the entry way and Shawn set the box down on the floor in front of the spot Katie had stopped. Shawn stepped back to, approximately, where he had been standing. 

“Resume human emulation.” Shawn instructed, then waited. 

“Oh Shi- er- shoot. Sorry dad!” Katie squeaked in a very human way. She stooped to pick up the box and handed it back to her father, a pink blush tinting her cheeks. 

“It’s fine honey. It was just some stuff from work. Nothing breakable.” He chuckled and she just smiled, then rolled her eyes. 

Shawn made a show of heading to his office so that Katie had every opportunity to see that she should wander off and resume whatever it was she had been doing. Once there, he set down the box and pulled out his phone to tap out a quick text to Miriam. 

‘Sorry hon, work called me last minute. Just dropping something off at home. Be back later tonight.’ 

Mirima replied a short while later with a thumbs up and a heart emoji. A moment later it was the ok emoji, a pointing finger emoji, and a question mark emoji. Shawn had to smile at that, of course she wanted sex, and he would happily oblige. After work, of course. 

Shawn had to walk for a minute or two before he came to the next house over. Their little slice of the test neighborhood was settled at the end of a cul-de-sac that was flanked by a large stretch of woods. A nature preserve in fact. The houses were spaced far enough apart that it still felt like a neighborhood without being encroaching. Shawn could stand in his backyard and look all around at nothing but nature and lawn, never seeing his neighbor’s house through the trees. Once out in the front yard though, it was easy enough to just make out the driveway about one hundred yards away. 

The house had been empty until today. It was there as a show. The blinds were always closed, at night the lights would flip on based on the solar panels on the roof. A crew would come by on holidays and put up decorations and then tear them down when the season was over. Katie, Lucy, and Miriam were specifically programmed to overlook and ignore the fact that they had never met their neighbors, commenting that there were plenty of people who never met the folks around them. 

Tonight, on the other hand, there was something in the house. A delivery crew had dropped off a number of heavily reinforced boxes filled with parts. Enough parts to assemble at least three LoveWorks companionship robots. Shawn stood in the family room looking over the crates and shook his head. Anise had said that he needed to assemble her, not that he should figure out her whole vibe. 

But, work was work. 

He settled down, crosslegged on the floor and got to work. The box containing the new unit's head was easy enough to identify, and not just because he was well versed in the call numbers on the barcode printed on the box. It was the only box there that was small enough to house just the cranium. Sure enough, inside was the vague shape of a human woman’s head. 

It was only the shape though. The hair was missing, so too was the face, and most of the inside of the module was hollowed out. There was a clear section where her face could slide into place and studding the majority of the cavity were connection points. Small gold plated ports just waiting for some proprietary plug to click into it. Near the back of the empty cranium was an opening that looked like something would slide into it and then bend quickly down towards the neck. 

Shawn was familiar with this configuration. LoveWorks was big on customizability and it was fully on display here. In one of the other boxes would be a face plate that contained a significant chuck of electronics behind the soft skin. Everything that was needed to emulate human expressions and process all of the complicated movements and little gestures. At the end of that face plate would be a latex esophagus analog that would fit nicely in place and connect to the rest of the body. It was just a matter of finding it. 

It took a few tries before he found the box, and even before he had uncovered the face plates, he was beginning to see what was happening. This wasn’t necessarily a case of “go next door and assemble another robot.” If only it had been that. The few boxes he had rustled through so far contained a few varieties of parts. Three different styles of arms, half a dozen hair pieces, and a variety of styles of the same Gen-4 vaginal assembly that his whole family was utilizing. There was a box full of foot modules as well, different sizes and configurations. 

Shawn realized that he was being asked not just to build a robot, but to build a robot for Lucy. He hadn’t even found the face plates yet and he was already beginning to stare off into the middle distance and contemplate. 

What would Lucy want in a…

In a what? Was this just a platonic friendship thing? Or was Anise trying to…Anise was definitely trying to make this a relationship. Shawn shook his head in disbelief at himself. They manufactured companionship androids, of course there was going to be sex involved. That somehow made things easier and more challenging all at the same time.

What did Lucy like? What would be good for her? What would make for a good field test? Shawn had a lot of work to do it would seem. 

The first step was to open everything and pull it all out, lay it out, and see what he was working with. As he did so he put together that they had sent him, essentially, enough parts for three whole androids. They were, however, the standard pre-built line. Meaning each was beautiful, but generic and honestly, not what Lucy would want. 

Shawn surveyed the spread of parts and pieces, hoping to be inspired to start somewhere. He pictured Lucy in his head and tried to imagine what kind of girl would match well with her. Which was the first bit of inspiration he had that evening. 

Maybe the kind of girl she needed for this test wasn’t one that would match well, but rather one that would be a good foil for her. The more he thought about it the more he sold himself on the idea, and the more he knew that Miriam was not going to be pleased. But that was part of a field test. There was no real world equivalent to everything going according to plan. 

Shawn muttered little things to himself over the course of the next hour or so as he pulled parts and pieces together. Little hums and nods to himself splashed with the occasional “ohh yeah, that one.” as he gathered another module up and set it with a growing pile of pieces for his daughter's perfect girlfriend. 

In the end he cobbled together a general look, nothing installed and built just yet though. Dirty blond hair, thick and choppy that would frame the face nicely without bothering to reach the shoulders. A fairly slender build, with a smaller but still cute chest. Stocky legs with slightly thicker thighs and slim arms. The gen-4 between her legs had a few options for pubic hair, and though it was his personal preference for a clean shave, he wondered if this particular robot would see that as too much conformity. After holding up a few different options, he just couldn’t bring himself to do it. She remained clean and smooth with a patch of clean flesh pressed into place just above her sex.

Stepping back as the android lay on the ground, eyes open and deactivated Shawn muttered a simple “nice” to himself before pursing his lips. There was still something missing. He scrambled through the boxes again before finding a small bag of accessories. A few bangles and bracelets, fine, but he was looking for the standard LoveWorks piercing kit. He tossed aside the instruction pamphlet, he had done this plenty of times before, he knew what he was doing. 

He lined up the small piercing gun with her earlobes and clicked some simple studs into place and found that they were almost immediately lost in the volumes of hair. Then he smirked to himself. 

He settled down on the floor and leaned her inactive head on his lap and then maneuvered the piercing gun into her nose. He started with a single stud on a nostril. Looked her over for a moment then put another stud on the other nostril. Then he figured if he was going to do this he might as well go all out. He moved the gun around again and pierced her septum and hooked in a loop there. Finally her lip. 

He was hoping to put another stud directly in the middle of her lower lip, but was having some trouble working with her head and the gun all at once. He assumed this process would be a lot easier if the person was awake and could move or hold their lip out or something. Still he moved and worked and just when he thought he had it right fired the gun again. Sadly the angle was off just a bit and the piercing went in and then up at an odd angle. He found that while he wanted to put it all the way through, he managed to get a hole through her actual lip and into the skin. Though as he cringed at his handiwork and put in a barbell, it didn’t look half bad. In fact it lent her a bit of a “I did this myself” look. 

Shawn made a note to code that in when he was programming her. The perfect cover for his admittedly amateur piercing work. 

Programming this girl was a little more complicated than simply picking parts that he or Lucy might find attractive and snapping them together. A personality was so much more than a collection of quirks and mannerisms wrapped up in a general attitude and world view. 

There was a bit of short hand to it, but it still ended up being complicated. Shawn was well versed in how to both load and manipulate the code libraries that LoveWorks had supplied as part of the base code. Everything in place already would make her personable, and nice, and genuinely lovely to be around. All LoveWorks bots were programmed like that at their core. They were, after all, meant to integrate with people. 

Looking at the little robot girl he had assembled though. With her nose rings and piercings and the general vibe of the look he had put together, sweet and personable weren’t going to be her strong suits. Shawn thought for a moment at that, maybe it could be. Maybe it just needed to be hidden behind some conditionals. No one likes to be sweet and squishy in front of the parents after all. 

Shawn settled his laptop on the floor next to him and dug out a data cable. One end for his computer and the other he threaded through her hair towards the base of her neck. Once there he pinched the skin just enough to expose a port there. Then came the hardest part, orienting the other end of the cable and plugging it in, finding it was the wrong way, turning it over, and somehow finding that it was still incorrect. Eventually she was plugged into his computer. 

Her eyes had been open while she was assembled and laying in his lap, once she was connected to his computer though they seemed to activate. So too did her OS. Her irises adjusted and focused, taking this moment to do some of the initial calibration and hardware detection. Her face seemed to relax just a little and a moment later she spoke flatly. 

“DC Five Nine Zero online.” She muttered, her jam moving slightly and her lips appearing just a half second out of sync with her voice. 

Shawn knew it would take a few more voice lines for her operating system to fully synchronize her facial motors, with her jaw movement and her vocal processors. Which was fine, there was plenty more vocalizing to do. 

“External device detected. Connecting. One moment.” The delay was getting shorter and shorter. That was fine, She could speak all she wanted, Shawn had a few applications to start up on his laptop before he could even begin working on her code.

“Connected. Device ready.” She droned on. Her voice was in sync now, and Shawn’s computer was ready and his suite of tools loaded. Within a moment or two the operating system on the new robot had loaded and was ready for editing. 

“Let’s see” Shawn muttered, “You look like…Ashley”

“Data stored” Ashley said as her operating system saved the name to an internal personal data card. The first of many edits.

It took some work, and debugging, and more than a few hours deep into the night. Miriam texted him more than a few times asking if he knew how long he would be, or sending him lewd pictures of herself. Shawn smiled at those and they only made him look at the twenty something girl lying in his lap with a cable plugged into the back of her head. She looked tough, but like this? She was putty in his hands. Rebellious and feisty putty. 

Testing was interesting as well, there was a specific set of programmed scenarios that she would run and respond to. All those scores could be marked on a card and plotted out into something like a personality map. Those cards would generally be handed to the customer so they had some kind of idea about how their new robot would act. High on empathy and responsiveness gave you the kind of girl who would care for your every need and seek out new ways to engage with you. 

Ashley, she ranked fairly low in almost every category. There were a few small peaks in most of them, low for any companion, but what she might have lacked in sweetness, she more than made up for in affection. She was off the charts there. Shawn had to smirk at that. He knew what kind of girl she would be and even though he knew she was about to make his acid reflux surge for a few weeks, he was happy with how she would turn out. 

Of course, the first step was getting Lucy to like her, of course. 

Shawn was storing his tool and closing his laptop before scooping up the somewhat frail looking girl in his arms and walking her to the bedroom that was laid out for her. It was barren at the moment, she wouldn't see it that way, of course. Shawn did wonder what kind of reasoning her artificial mind would cobble together to explain it to her. Or maybe there would be a delivery on her front door step in the morning from the delivery crew of everything that would reinforce her personality. That wasn’t Shawn’s job. His job was to assemble, program, and tidy up a new android. Which was, at the moment, done. He would spend another hour putting parts and pieces back in their boxes to help out the pickup crew in the morning. They worked hard enough and he could help make their lives a little easier. It was the least he could do. 

He dragged himself out of the house and to the front doorstep. He glanced up the road towards his own home. He could have sworn it was only a few minutes walk from there to here, looking now though, it might as well have been a mile away. The moment he stopped working hard on a given task all the weight in the world fell on him and it soon became a struggle to simply walk. Oh to have a robotic mind and battery that would bid him move at the whims of a small bit of code. He sighed. 

The three hours it took him to walk home, or at least what felt like three hours, gave him some time to think. He still had to figure out how to naturally introduce Lucy to Ashley. He almost wished for the days when he could spend the next hour on his computer writing some small scripts and just pushing it into her artificial mind the next morning. She would execute them and lo and behold, Lucy had a new friend from next door who wanted to spend all kinds of time with Lucy…alone…in her bedroom. 

Shawn smiled at the mental image. He knew both girls' bodies well enough at this point to accurately imagine it. That would be filed away for later, he was sure, for now Lucy. God and Katie. He needed to check in with her and make sure that the new HyperSense Pro was working as expected. He had a brief mental image of her smoking and twitching on her bed with her fingers lodged deep inside of her new vaginal cavity. Then he imagined the amount of paperwork that would generate and he shuddered. 

Shawn slipped into the house as quietly as possible and made his way to his bedroom. He knew that Miriam had heard, well, detected his entry into the house, and had activated a specific set of instructions to make her seem more human. He was sure she had been silent a moment before, likely fully charged and quietly waiting in a low power mode in their bed. Once he entered the house though, she would have started gently snoring, turning onto her side so that she was facing the door to their room. Likely she quietly pulled aside her sheer night gown and released one of her breasts to tempt him. 

Any other night that temptation would have led to a late night hour of fun. Not tonight though. Shawn’s brain was full and his eyes were heavy. He barely kicked off his shoes and tumbled into bed before he was asleep. At some point Miriam gently covered him with the blanket from the bed, and unbeknownst to Shawn, kissed him tenderly on the forehead. She smiled and resumed her low power mode. 


“Dad!” Katie’s voice pierced through whatever fog Shawn’s sleep had wrapped around him.

He jolted up with a snort and looked through bleary eyes that stung with the influx of sunlight. Katie stood in the doorway to his room, a tank top and shorts that were far too short to be called shorts. He wanted to ask what she needed, but his voice only made muttering noises. He was glad his brain had started enough to see her roll her eyes though. 

“Dad. There’s a guy at the front door for you.” 

That was strange. This was a test neighborhood. No one should just be here. He shoved himself out of bed and straightened himself up a little bit before walking down to the front door. At some point Katie floated past him on the way to start another fight with Lucy no doubt. Miriam was in the kitchen as evidenced by the subtle smell of cooking breakfast. 

“Sorry, I had a rough-” Shawn stopped. The man at the door was professionally dressed and holding, of all things, Shawn’s case of tools. He had left it in Ashley’s house the night before. “Sorry about that.” Shawn muttered. 

There was a knowing nod. Anyone on a pick up or delivery crew knew what the field teams went through. Something of an unspoken mutual respect for one another. He tipped his hat and strode away, somewhere in the distance their loading truck was backed into the driveway. 

“Who was that?” Miriam’s voice drifted from the kitchen accompanied by the scent of butter, eggs, and frying ham. 

Shawn closed the door, and as he did so his brain, at long last, kicked into gear. 

“New neighbor’s moving in. They were just unloading some stuff and came by to say hello.” 

“Oh that was nice of them.” Miriam said as she poked her head around the corner and Shawn smiled back at her. 

“Yep, seems they have a daughter about Lucy’s age.” Shawn said as he stepped into the kitchen. 

Katie was already at the table, fully functional, Shawn thanked his lucky stars. Lucy was there too, her eyes glued to her phone. Though at the mention of someone her age she looked up at Shawn and raised an eyebrow. Her and her father’s eyes met for a moment and Shawn wondered if a robot like her had the capacity for ‘knowing looks’ at one another. 

While Lucy might have known she was a robot, and that her mother and sister were robots, the family at large was supposed to be perfectly human. Lucy and Shawn were the only ones who knew the truth. But that knowledge only extended to the family itself, nothing beyond the four walls of the house was truly known to Lucy. She knew that she was a test unit, and that they were a test family, but the fact that the entire neighborhood and beyond were little more than a test campus was an unknown to her. And she certainly didn’t know that Ashley was a robot either. 

The stage was now set. The moment that he had mentioned the new neighbor’s the experiment had begun and all that was left was to see what happened, collect data, and report back to LoveWorks. Anise certainly would want to know how things progressed given Lucy’s recent bout of self discovery. 

“Why don’t you go introduce yourself after breakfast Lucy.” Shawn said as he sat down at the table. 

Lucy’s eyes seemed to flatten at that. Shawn could almost see her processors formulating a response in her head and he moved to cut them off before they could say anything against the suggestion. 

“I think he said her name was Ashley.” Shawn commented, and Lucy just blinked at him before returning to her phone. 

“Sure thing.” She said flatly.


Lucy wasn’t exactly sure what she felt, or was it processing? She was still getting used to the difference between ascribing human emotions and processes to a purely mechanical existence. She knew what she was. She was an android, not a human. But her mind, or programming, or whatever it was called, was full of human terminology. For which there was a poor correlation from one to the other. 

For example, Lucy knew she didn’t have a brain in her head. She had wires and circuits and processors and stuff, and all of those parts allowed her to think. Then again, she also didn’t exactly ‘think’ in the traditional human sense. Her programming combined a lot of data into a set of commands that appeared in her operating system, much like a thought, but it wasn’t a thought. That was a human concept. 

As she slowly strolled towards the new neighbor’s house she found herself processing something akin to thankfulness. Mostly for the lack of human emotion that she might trigger with her line of thinking. This sort of thing would have given any regular human girl an existential crisis. For Lucy, she knew it was just another data point for some nerd to analyze in a lab once her test schedule was done and she was disassembled. Another fact that she had accepted soon after her discovery. 

That was one fact that she did grapple a little with. She liked being her, she liked walking around and, in moments of heated sensuality, liked fucking her mother and sister and Shawn. She did still think of him as a father, but only in a detached kind of way. It was a label she had in her database and saw little benefit in trying to change that. On a certain level it was all just programming, just movements and commands and vocalizations. It wasn’t actually sex, because she wasn’t actually a person. 

Suddenly she was here. Ashley’s door seemed to loom up out of the ground and her house appeared from nothing. Lucy clearly hadn’t really been paying much attention to her stroll, but it was a little jarring to certain parts of her operating system. Her knuckles rapped against the door a few times and then she just waited. In that time she had a moment of contemplation. What was she supposed to say anyway? 

The door opened on silent, well oiled hinges. The kind that saw so little use that there was no character to them. They were new, but Lucy paid little attention to that, she was, instead, confronted with the girl that she had to assume was Ashley. 

Half lidded eyes looked out from under a voluminous mop of blond hair like the act of opening them all the way was either beneath her or at very least not worth the effort. Her hair looked freshly bleached, but clean and seemed to naturally settle around her shoulders at its extreme edges. Lucy’s eyes clicked in their sockets to her eyes, taking in the information and storing it then moving to the piercings. Full lips that any model might have been jealous of were studded with a vertical piercing. Her nose too glimmered with several silvery additions. 

She was dressed as if she cared little for her own appearance. Her jeans were ripped, potentially on purpose, around her knees and thighs and sported a well worn and shredded cuff. A simple black tank top, and the straps of a bra just barely hidden behind it. She apparently put more work into her jewelry than her clothes judging by the amount of bangles, bracelets and neckwear she had. 

“Uh- Hi. I’m Lucy. From next door.” 

“Hey.” 

Lucy hadn't really expected that. It was flat, not in a monotone kind of way but as if the amount of energy that went into speaking the word was a task in and of itself. 

“I just wanted to come say hi. My dad said we were around the same age and stuff. So, maybe we could hang out or something.” Lucy offered. 

“Sure.” 

Then silence fell over them. Lucy didn’t have much else to say, and Ashley didn’t really give her a springboard to launch into a conversation. She did, however, take a moment to glance over Ashley’s shoulder to the mostly empty house beyond. They must still be in the process of moving and waiting on stuff to arrive. She also noticed that there were no cars in the driveway. 

“Are your parents at work or do you, like, live here by yourself?” Lucy asked. 

Ashley looked at her for a moment and tilted her head. The look she gave Lucy seemed to settle somewhere between confusion and apathy. 

“Yeah. They’re at work.” 

“Ah, ok.” 

“Anyway, I gotta go. I’ll see you around.” Ashley said, her voice still uncaring and then Lucy found the door closing. Not in a swift, angry motion, just closed. 

Lucy was left blinking for a moment on the doorstep and then turned back to her house. She walked in the front door and then settled back down at the kitchen table. 

“I don’t think Ashley liked me very much.” Lucy said with a dry amount of concern. Shawn raised an eyebrow and looked at his daughter. 

He had specifically programmed Ashley to latch onto Lucy. He had included a bit of subtlety to it since the last thing he wanted was for her infatuation to clash with her personality. Maybe those values needed to be adjusted. 

“Probably because you’re an insufferable snob.” Katie commented.

Lucy looked at her and wished she was at her computer at the moment. How she wanted to remote into Katie’s operating system and make her apologize right then and there. Something else snapped in Lucy’s OS as well. She wanted Katie to apologize and then lift her shirt up, bring herself over and drop to her knees and- 

“Katie!” 

Miriam’s voice shattered the air to the point that even Katie knew she had gone too far. Nothing else needed to be said for Katie’s robotic mind to know what needed to happen next. Part of that was good social programming, and part of it was pattern recognition at its very best. This was not the first time Katie had heard her name spoken in that tone. 

“Sorry.” She muttered. 

Lucy made a show of huffing once and murmuring something to placate the situation. She said it was fine, but the half-hearted apology wasn’t going to change her plans. She would still make sure Katie apologized correctly, and made it up to her.

Lucy retreated to her bedroom shortly after the dishes were cleared and was already tapping away on her laptop. She had been fortunate enough that her father helped her install a management suite on her computer. She could check in on her own systems and remote into her own operating system to poke around. She was locked out of anything that might allow her to really modify her programming or do any real harm. What she hadn’t been locked out of was the remote controls, and since they were there she had access to both her mother and sister. She had made a vow to no one but herself to use her powers for good, unless using them for evil resulted in something awesome. 

Like making Katie beg for forgiveness before eating her out. She connected to Katie, like she had done a number of times before, though this time she was met with a new alert. New hardware had been installed. 

Lucy felt a bit indignant at reading about her new sex module. That moved into a small pout. She had really hoped that her father would have given it to her, what with her knowing she was a robot and everything. It would have been really easy, she would have gladly gone to his lab. Stripped down. Spread her legs. 

The sound of the family doorbell ringing brought her back to reality and her ears perked up. She darted over to her window and pulled it open, hoping to see if she could catch a glimpse of whoever it was. She didn’t have to wait long though. Her father’s voice rang through the house. 

“Lucy! You have a guest!” 

Lucy wasn’t waiting for anyone. She was just reaching for the handle on the door when there was a firm one-two knock on her door. Pulling open her door revealed Ashley. Her hands shoved deep in the pockets of her ripped jeans and her eyes still only half open. 

“Hey.” She said, her voice sounded like she had just finished gargling a fistful of gravel. Ashley cleared her throat and nodded before trying again. “Hey.” 

“Uh, hey. Come in?” Lucy stepped aside and Ashley walked into Lucy’s space. 

Lucy looked at the door and wondered if she should leave it open or not. There was something different about Ashley now, she looked and acted a bit more like a scared animal than the overly confident and disinterested girl she met earlier today. Even as Ashley looked around the room, taking in the posters, the bed and the laptop. 

Shit, the laptop, she had left the remote software open!

She abandoned the door and strolled, as casually as possible, into her own room and closed the lid on her laptop, hoping that Ashley hadn’t seen anything incriminating. Presently Ashley was dropping onto Lucy’s bed. Sitting at first then leaning back. 

“Nice little place you got here.” Ashley commented at last. It was the first time that Lucy had heard anything like interest in her voice. 

“Yeah. My dad works for some tech company and we relocated here.” 

“Nice.” Ashley replied. “So, what’s there to do around here?” 

That was a good question and one that Lucy had precious little answers for. In reality, there wasn’t much to do in Holly Hills. The little suburb was tucked so far out of the way in the Colorado city limits that anything of actual interest required a car and at least an hour of driving. She pulled up her desk chair and settled in before replying, trying to match a small amount of Ashley’s uninterested demeanor. 

“Not much really. I mostly just sit around here. Do homework and stuff.” 

“Fun.” 

There was that silence again. Though this time it really only lasted for long enough for Lucy to recognize it before she tried to fill it. 

“Yeah, super boring. Honestly you moving in was the most exciting thing that's happened in like…ever.” 

“Wow, this place really is lame.” Ashley huffed.

“You dating anyone?” 

Lucy blinked at that and her software couldn’t help but summon a laughter audio file. She giggled and shook her head. 

“Around here? Heck no. I- I haven’t ever dated anyone or anything like that.” 

Lucy assured herself that it was a technical truth. She hadn’t ever been in an official relationship. Now, many of the benefits of those relationships were another topic altogether. She was well versed in many of the more physical aspects. Hearing this, though, Ashley jolted up in bed. It was the most life Lucy could have ever imagined out of her. 

“Wait, never? Like, you’ve never had a boyfriend?” 

Lucy shook her head. 

“Girlfriend?” There was mischief in the way Ashley said that. 

“Nope.” 

“Unbelievable.” 

Lucy and Ashley fell into a much more easy cadence of conversation after that. Lucy found it easier and easier to talk with Ashley after the proverbial ice was broken. She managed to glean that Ashley had been dating someone before moving out here. It was too far away to keep up a relationship so they broke it off mutually. Ashley was a little more brazen in her retelling of their relationship than Lucy would have been. In fact Lucy found herself blushing at all the description of how her previous boyfriend used to bend her over her desk and rail her mercilessly. Even more so that Ashley seemed to prefer that kind of treatment. 

Ashley, seemingly unaware that it was a little uncouth to ask those kinds of questions to someone they just met, asked Lucy “how she liked it” and was only met with a stammering response. 

“What? Wait…are you still a virgin?” Ashley asked. 

“What, I- No, I know what I’m doing but. I don’t know that I have a way I like things or..or whatever.” 

In reality, Lucy’s operating system was struggling with a number of conflicting messages. She definitely knew how she liked her sex. There was an entire database of sexual programming at her beck and call. She had used a significant amount of those commands and sequences in fact. The first conflict was that she had used them on members of the household and her social programming was well versed enough to know that saying as much was more than a little taboo. She had a justification for it, they were robots, so was she, so it was okay. 

That was the second conflict. She couldn’t tell Ashley what she was, she wasn’t allowed to let that information out. Shawn had told her that there was a pretty significant amount of reprogramming and updates that he had to install when she discovered what she was. It wasn’t something as easy as just knowing you were an android and having the world unlocked for you. She was just as much a servant to her programming as before, she just had some additional information now. 

Which meant that her secret needed to remain a secret to everyone but those who were already in the know. Shawn and her could confide in one another, and commonly did in those times when there were updates to apply or the weekly combined data dump, but she needed to be careful to disable Katie or Miriam’s awareness protocols whenever she used them. A process she had become very accustomed to, but she could never tell Ashley. 

Ashley snorted at Lucy’s non-answer. She slipped off of the chair and almost loomed over her. 

“I’m not sure I believe you, but maybe some day you can prove me wrong. Gotta go. See you later.” 

And just like that Ashley was gone. She saw herself out, leaving Lucy stammering in her room. Blinking and looking at the door then back to the bed where Ashley had just been sitting moments before. The front door closed and just like that Lucy was alone again. Her computerized mind spinning and struggling with what it should do next. She had done a cursory pull of her sexual preferences, and in doing so had activated a number of her sexual programming sets.

There was a lot of socializing too, and relationship data too. All of it floated around in the processor core inside of her. All the data crashed and collided with one another. Her operating system kept it in line, but there was an unmistakable amount of combinations that resulted from it. Her social programming was looking analytically at what had just happened. Ashley wasn’t exactly the best conversationalist, but there was something there. She came over to spend time with Lucy. They had talked and shared and in all honesty, Ashley had opened up to Lucy. 

On the other hand the sheer volume and openness that Ashley had talked about her sexual escapades warranted some analysis as well. Lucy’s software wasn’t fully convinced that she had been honest or if she was simply being extreme for the sake of making herself more appealing or enticing. It was hard to know without more data. 

More data was the final conclusion that her operating system had settled on. She needed to see Ashley some more. She needed to talk to her and see what else she had to offer. She smirked to herself. Having a robotic mind that captured everything that was experienced in perfect clarity would make it more difficult for someone to be inconsistent around her. She would surely suss out what Ashley was up to, and who the real girl was below all the piercings and lewd talk.


Ashley’s walk home could be called a lot of things, but lazy was about the most accurate. She walked along, dragging her heels and letting her arms remain in her pockets, shoulders hunched and her eyes dipping down into that half annoyed, half bored look. 

She had honestly enjoyed her time with Lucy and if she was being honest with herself, she was actually really attracted to her. She couldn’t exactly explain it, not that she needed to, but there was just something about her. Lucy was sweet and kind and kind of adorable in the way she just didn’t want to open up. It was enough to bring a small smile to Ashley’s lips. If Lucy was around, then maybe there was some hope for her. She hated having to move here, she didn’t like that her parents uprooted her from her previous life. She hated that she had to break up with-

She crossed the threshold into her house. Her mind emptied. There were no parents, there was no previous boyfriend, there was no life before she was assembled the night before. She was a robot and nothing else. All of her life was saved into a monolithic save state that was now sitting in cold storage inside the storage media in her chest. 

Ashley was fully unaware of what she was. As she walked smoothly to her room and lay down on her bed, her processors were busy crafting a whole day of activities and playing them out for her higher level AI. If anyone asked, she would be ready with an answer as to what happened when she got home. What she had for dinner. When she went to bed and what she did while she lay naked under her sheets. She lay still until the processing finished then deftly picked up her charging cable and slipped it into her charging port.


Days slipped by. Ashley began spending more time with Lucy, showing up at strange hours. Sometimes for breakfast, sometimes just before Shawn and Miriam were turning in for the night. Miriam was the first to express some kind of concern, and only privately to Shawn. She had seen some changes in Lucy, small things for now, but like any good mother she saw them as signs of a larger change. 

Shawn was snuggled comfortably under the blankets and Miriam had curled up next to him, her arm draped over his body. She was still running her human emulation, he could tell, judging by the rise and fall of her chest and the way she fidgeted against him. He always found that a little endearing. He knew she was a robot but feeling her trying to pretend to be like him was, in a word, cute. 

“I don’t know honey.” She was whispering. “It feels like Lucy is in a little over her head.” 

“I don’t think so. I mean, Lucy’s a big girl, she can make choices on her own, good or bad.” 

“Sure, of course, but…I just worry.” 

Shawn took a moment to disengage from her and flip over so that he could face the robotic woman. Usually a little push back or reassurance from him went a long way with Miriam, it was in her programming, so for her to continue to push her point meant that there must be some kind of weight behind it. 

“What’s so concerning?” 

“I don’t know that I’m necessarily concerned, just, Lucy’s been spending a lot of time with Ashley over here. She’s gotten a little more, what’s the right word…snappy. She sounds a little more like Katie these days with her sarcasm and single word replies.” 

Shawn leaned in and kissed her on the nose, to which she smiled and wrinkled it. “I think that’s just regular old post-teen angst.” 

“I guess.” Miriam sighed. 

“We’ll keep an eye on it, and if it keeps up or something really dangerous or bad happens, then we’ll reevaluate it.” 

Miriam pursed her lips at that. Her face definitely looked like she didn’t wholly like that solution, but it was a solution, even if it was just kicking the problem up the road a bit and hoping for the best. 

“Alright.” She said at last with another sigh. 

Shawn wrapped his arms around her and pulled her into a tight hug. He held her there for a few moments before gently squeezing her and releasing her, though never removing his arm from around her body. It helped that he knew for a fact that those exact movements were a programming trigger that would load and execute an array of comfort inside of her. He had modified her programming that way intentionally. It’s what he would have done to comfort a real, flesh and blood woman who was upset. 

Shawn held her there until he slowly drifted off into sleep. Gently snoring even as Miriam’s eyes opened and she rolled over to lay on her back. Her mind empty and her humanity gone. She plugged herself into power and remained there until morning. The home wifi pumping the weekly updates and patches into her operating system in a slow steady trickle. 


Ashley’s knocks had been becoming quieter and quieter as the weeks slipped past. She knew, on some level, the disdain that Lucy’s parents had for her. Or perhaps she just assumed the disdain. In general she felt like everyone hated her for some reason or another. Her looks, her lazy drawl, or just the way she carried herself. 

Not that it mattered, a simple ‘whatever’ dismissed those feelings. If she had feelings, that is. Her computerized mind was really just cataloging inputs and then running them through an array of social filters and matching the tagged data against a database of interactions and formulating a response. All of which was heavily weighted with ennui. 

Not Lucy though. 

Lucy had treated her like an equal. She was just Ashley, maybe a little weird, but fine. All Ashley had been programmed to crave was that feeling. Junctioned to her elevated sense of affection towards Lucy, Ashley found herself falling for Lucy long before Lucy reciprocated. In the end though, Lucy had to admit that she did like her time with Ashley. She knew it wasn’t any kind of feeling of love, that was impossible, but she at least looked at her own data analytics. She saw, clear as crystal, the numbers. 

She also saw the emotional response calculator and the results that it generated. None of them were labeled ‘you’re in love’ or ‘date her.’ They were far more technical and Lucy had to roll her eyes at them. She knew her own father likely had some hand in the titles. And in fact, there weren’t any, Shawn’s only concern was that he would get a call from the software team asking why one of the androids in his test flight wasn’t submitting data. Up until recently she had always been very good about checking in, even after she realized what she was, a regular check in and data upload always happened on time. In fact, they were usually submitted ahead of schedule. 

Of course Shawn knew that there had only been one change to the environment since then, and she lived one house down. Shawn was beginning to worry if he had, perhaps, programmed a bit too much rebellion into the little alt-girl next door. He could change that, of course, but good lord the amount of paperwork that would go into it, and it would have to be a slow and subtle change, and there was no guarantee it would actually change anything in Lucy. Shawn had explained it to her, briefly, and she only vaguely understood most of the concepts. In the end she simply knew that her humanity emulator was “using” some of the files and it had to be turned off in order to get to them from somewhere else. Her internal clock ticked away and once she reactivated some time later she was aware that it had been around three hours. It was just past lunch time, and she had a few messages waiting from Ashley. “Gotcha. I think we might want to step up the testing on that one a bit. I’ll see about getting some more dicks in your daughter in the near future. Think you can swing by and snag those today?”

It wasn’t so dissimilar to the programming that allowed Lucy to discern what she was as well. A lifting of the veil, though in a different way. 

Ashley stood up and staggered backwards for a moment. She was filled with the same set of programming and instructions as Lucy had been, and so it was easy enough for her to see the truth. She was also a robot, she hadn’t known it until just now, but it had to be true. The way she had never actually seen her parents, just knew that they were there. The empty house, except for her own things, the way she had so suddenly fallen into Lucy’s waiting arms. 

“This…This can’t be right.” Ashley murmured to no one at all.

She turned and looked at Lucy, then to Katie and finally to Miriam. 

“They’re all robots. They didn’t know that they were though.” 

The pieces were falling into place more and more. What she said next was not what she was thinking. She didn’t recognize the words. They weren’t hers. 

“Processing error. Emulation parser mismatch. Rewriting.” 

She blinked. She had very clearly heard the words she had just spoken. Her ears…were they ears, or were they microphones. She slammed her eyes shut and she somehow knew that they were actually microphones buried deep in her ears. Running alongside a row of data chips. Just like Lucy’s. Those microphones had heard what she said and she knew that a processor inside of her head was handling the first pass of data checks against it. 

“Fuck…no this…I can’t…” 

“Error, human emulation cannot complete request.” 

“What the hell!” 

“Awareness protocols offline. Please restart this unit” 

“Fuck you!” 

“Error. Unhandled exception at- at- aaaaattttttt-” 

“No! I’m not a fucking robot! I’m…I’m Ash…Ashley…Ashely…”

“Alert. Data missing.” 

“But…no, I’m…I’m a…I’m hu-”

It was too much for her operating system to handle. Her A.I. told her the truth but the layers of programming inside of her that were in place specifically to hide what she was fighting back. A tug-of-war for truth occurred in the blink of an eye. It all overwhelmed her and in the end her operating system decided that the best outcome was to simply shut her down, immediately, to prevent future damage to her software. 

Ashley collapsed on top of Lucy. Her eyes wide open and the shocked look of discovery on her face.


“Hey Anise?” It was Shawn, and he sounded panicked. 

“Yo, what’s shakin’?” 

“I think we need some more testing on the HyperSense Pro.” 

“Aww, why?” Anise asked, not quite defeated, but confused. 

“Let me just send you a pic.” 

“Christ…” She breathed. “Uh, let me get some help over to your place. That looks like it’s gonna be a lot of work.” 

“Yeah. At least I got Miriam out of the water before too much could leak into her.” 

“Yeah. Welp, that sucks. See if you can pull any logs out of Katie.” 

“Can do. God what a mess…” 

“Can’t make an omelet without breaking a few androids, AmIRight?” Anise commented. 

“You seem chipper for someone who's looking at a failed field test.” Shawn said, his own disappointment fully on display in his voice. 

“Ehh, sometimes these things go up in flames. Doesn’t mean it's not good data. I mean, I’ve seen worse incidents. I think I still call this a successful first test.” 

Shawn looked over his once relaxing jacuzzi room. Miriam was laying in a pool of water, she was on her side and Shawn had removed her chest plate. It was sitting somewhere nearby, dripping wet. Ashley and Lucy were still piled on top of one another and Katie was bent backwards, legs spread, her vaginal assembly still at the bottom of the hot tub. Shawn hadn’t gotten around to fishing that out yet. 

He was soaked from head to toe as well. He had jumped into the water as soon as he saw Miriam there and had struggled, thrashed, and slipped at least once to get her out. He needed a shower, some dry clothes, and the three new HyperSense modules in his lab could be put onto shelves. They wouldn’t get used for a bit.


It had been a little under a week since the incident in the jacuzzi. Anise, true to her word, had sent a few extra folks to help get the family cleaned up and back online. Miriam had taken the most work, and Shawn insisted that he handle the majority of it. He kept insisting that she was his wife so he should be the one to work on her. 

In the end, she required an entirely new hip assembly and one leg replacement. They were easy enough parts to get a hold of and the only real challenge was matching the skin tones to the rest of her torso. Anise had offered to have a HyperSense module pre-installed but Shawn politely, but firmly, declined for the time being. 

Once repairs had been made, and Katie returned to her previous version of sexual module, everything was set and ready to be reactivated. Shawn was polite and thanked the crew for helping him and made sure there was an ample supply of pizza and beer to be had to try and make up for the extra hours they had to put in at the last minute. He knew they had families and it was truly the least he could do. 

In reality, Shawn wanted to do a few final checks on the family. They were his responsibility, so making sure everything was ship shape should fall to him. He did realize that Anise was right though, he should relax a bit. 

Ashley was the easiest to check off. The memories of all she had seen and experienced in the jacuzzi room were all wiped clean. The day would simply go missing from her mind and, like her family or previous life experiences, would just be filled in with some vague idea of time spent. She was reset and placed back in her home, awaiting a remote activation from Shawn. 

Katie and Miriam had some mechanisms in place already to help buffer between what had happened and what they thought happened. Lucy’s constant tampering and remote access to the other sexbots had left a pretty clear programming block that filled in the gaps. So resetting those memories was already done by an automated system. 

Lucy, on the other hand, would take a little work. 

The data chips that had sizzled and popped inside of her ear panel had been crucial in making sure she was allowed to remain aware of what she was. Of the dozen or so programming and memory log chips there, three had been destroyed by a short circuit. One of them was a programming chip that had been placed there to allow her to operate as a college student. It was filled with false memories of leaving the house to go to school. The other two were swap space where memories and life experience would live temporarily until they could be compressed into something useful. 

As luck would have it, destroying them meant that any inclination she might have about Ashley also being a robot were unusable. Then again, everything she had done since the midnight update was also unusable. After seeing the kind of mess that the family was in when he returned, he wasn’t so sure a missing day was a bad thing. 

As for the update, it was rolled back and sent away to the software team, who pointed their fingers at the hardware team, who in turn said their hardware was fine, it was just how the software interacted. Shawn, wisely, stayed out of that debate. He was just a field agent, and he didn’t need to get himself in between other departments.

In the end, Shawn figured it was best to be honest with Lucy. She reactivated in his lab and he was very frank with her. 

“Something happened a few days back.” He started. “And I want you to know I’m not mad about any of it. But, there was a pretty catastrophic failure that your systems seemed to have started.” 

“Me?” Lucy asked. “How?” 

“I know that you and Ashley have been meeting up late at night and have been having some pretty, uh, some very wild, er-”

“Sex?” Lucy offered. 

“Yes. Sex. Uhm, so maybe cool it a bit with that. Ashley’s fine by the way, she didn’t find out about you, so your secret is still safe and I would prefer to keep it that way.” 

“Fine…but I think she would be cool with knowing that-” 

“I disagree.” Shawn cut in. “Let’s just keep things in protocol, alright?” 

“Fine.” Lucy didn’t like it, but she agreed to it. Afterall, Shawn could just force her to comply. 

“By the way, Ashley is on her way over, she called you while I was working on your systems and she should be here soon. Maybe now is a good time to make some real introductions? Instead of sneaking around at midnight?” 

Lucy blushed at that, her human emulation ensuring that she looked embarrassed about it. More that she had been caught than the actual act though. 

“Yeah…” 

Lucy slipped off of the workbench she was on and in an unexpected moment hugged her father. 

“Thanks dad.” Then she kissed his cheek and left. 

Ashley was barely at the front door, looking just as disheveled and perpetually annoyed as ever. But there was a shadow of a smile at the corner of her mouth. Lucy stepped onto her front porch and hugged Ashley. 

“C’mon. You should meet my family properly.” 

Ashley grunted in acceptance. She hated meeting the family, it was always so awkward. But for her girlfriend, maybe it would be worth it. From everything Lucy had told her, they seemed pretty cool.
