A malfunction is a common trope in ASFR fiction. A malfunction is an event when a fembot suddenly fails to function properly, because of conception flaws, environmentally-caused damages or deliberate sabotage. This event can range from small software glitches to catastrophic failures resulting in the permanent disactivation of said fembot.

A malfunction is commonly visually represented by sparks flying out of the unit's body, error messages (verbal or textual in robo-vision/panels), loss of motor control leading to jerky and spasmic movement, and even explosions. It can also lead a fembot, in the case of a software malfunction, to accidentaly or purposely hurt itself or other peoples.
